How Do I Apply Through the IMP?
This Temporary Foreign Work Permit Program starts with your Canadian employer.
Step 1-Job Offer
Your prospective employer will have to give an official job offer in Canada via the Employer Portal.
Employers will have to meet certain requirements to hire foreign workers through the International Mobility Program.
- Check to see if the job or worker qualifies for an LMIA exemption.
- Pay the compliance fee of $230, and
- Furnish an official job offer via the IMP Employer Portal (if required).
If you already have an open work permit, then the employer need not submit a job offer nor pay the compliance fee that makes the application both easier and quicker.
Step 2: Obtain a Work Permit
Once the open work permit application is submitted, then apply for your temporary foreign work permit. Then you need to get an offer from an employer number to complete your application. If you are eligible to work in Canada, then your application is approved and you will receive a letter of introduction and a work permit from a Canadian border services officer or a new work permit.
Important to note: this work permit is the only way to enter Canada. Then you will be furnished with a Visitor's Visa (Travel Visa) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTa) as soon as you arrive there from another country. You may need to give a medical certificate to show that you are in good health.
Step 3: Align everything for Your New Job in Canada
Once you have your work permit and travel visa, you can move ahead to start your new life in Canada.
